found this emoticon at a message board i frequent. very apt for today's post topic.
oh my god! just got back from the Phantom of the Opera!!!!! it's freaking cool man!!!! totally worth the $147 for the tickets.
before that, had gone shopping as mentioned for the dress (also mentioned). wore the new outfit for this. felt so glam!
met sumi a little late cos i missed the train. but no matter, got to the esplanade just on time, they were announcing the 10minute signal. so went in and proved murphy's law that the people seated in the middle of the row are always the latest to arrive. haaha! cos we were almost in the middle, and we were late. and there were 4 seats next to us (middle also) and they were also later to arrive. anyway, the stage was already set for the first scene, the auction scene. that one was alright. the music box monkey was just so...poignant. the tinkle of the song was so sweet and somehow sad. the old vicount was saying, "will you still play on after all of us have gone?" as if he was thinking, "if only you could talk and tell us what you have seen." anyway, and then, the chandelier! ok, not AS impressive as i expected it to be, but still. it lifted to hang over the heads of the audience. then the auctioneer saying to chase away the ghosts of the past with a little illumination!!! and the...oh ya, forgot to say, the stage frame was covered in gray cloth at this time. and after the auctioneer said the thing about illumination, the chandelier (lying on stage) lit and started to lift up to above the audience. and the stage frame coverings also drew back/fell. BUT the one on stage left (i think. audience right.) got caught in the angel carving that was underneath. and a tech had to lean over the balcony and pull it in. lol! but the effect was cool anyway!
then, the initial rehersal scene. charlotta was alright, not as funny as the movie one. probably cos the movie one was exaggerated a lot. mdm giry was cool! she got this, 'don't-mess-with-me' look on her face. so cool the way she just bang on the stage once with her stick and everyone snaps to attention. monsieur andre and firmant were funny! kept getting in the way of the dancers. christine sang ok, not as good as i expected her to but her high notes were spot on. :D
somehow, i think the scene changes and all that, it works in the stage musical but it didn't work in the movie version. i remember it was all a bit disjointed in the movie. but it worked so well here. that raoul, silly rich boy. lol!
the phantom!!!! *gasp* love him. brad little did it quite well. but! i don't think he acted well. love his voice though. don't understand why people say he's not a good phantom. so romantic. BUT!!!!! i didn't like his "music of the night". i didn't feel like it was tender enough. but then, maybe this is their interpretation of the song. whatever. oh ya! the effects! don't know how to even start describing them. magnificent. the underground lake for starters. they had lots of smoke and the candles appeared, like popped up from out of the stage floor. how did they do that??! it was impressive. the whole stage covered with the 'candles' and the smoke to imitate the water, then the phantom and christine in the 'boat' and 'rowing'. ah!! oh ya, the phantom cursing christine when she first pulled off his mask was not venomous enough to me. but it was cute the way he dragged himself from one side of the stage to the other, literally dragging his body - not crawling, it's one of those wipe-the-floor-with-your-body kind of action. ok, it wsn't supposed to be funny but it was to me.
then, the part where charlotta started croaking. :D not as good as the movie version, this one sounded like it was done on purpose. (which duh, it was) the movie one really sounded like she didn't mean to sound like that but it just came out.
i L-O-V-E the part where after christine and raoul sing the "all i ask of you", where the phantom is revealed to be hiding and listening to them. i already talked about there being a stage frame, well, the top piece, in the middle, there's an arrangement of angels arms outstretched, wings spread etc etc. well, then, the phantom appeared on it, and (get this!) it lowered itself with him on it, and he was crying over christine's betrayal on it. wah liao! feel scared for him, could see the piece swaying in the air as he stood on it. anyway, that was probably one of the best to me. cos as it lowered, there was some kind of light inside it that shone through the eyes and mouth of the angel and made the thing look like a demon. i'm serious! it looked like the phantom was crying revenge whilst supported by a platform of demons holding him up. then there was the "you will curse the day you did not do, all that the phantom asked of you!!!!!!!!" the piece rose back up to it's place. but what i found so cool was that, as brad little was singing his "you!!!!!!" glory note, he had arms outstretched, and the platform was moving lah! imagine, the glory note, the phantom theme music rising to crescendo, the phantom with arms outstretched in anticipation of revenge, and the platform rising, rising, rising until you can't see the phantom anymore as he disappears into the darkness of the top stage frame. *shivers*
then the interval. i was already stunned. bought the programme for $25. expensive! wanted to buy the phantom mask but i don't think can pull out the money. went to take a look at the orchestra pit. :D it's under the stage cool! oh ya, forgot to mention, they used a lot of sound effect for the phantom, as in, can make his voice sound like it's coming from the back of the theatre or something, remember that effect? so the voice was suddenly behind, suddenly to the right, on the stage, to the left, to the right again...
the second half seemed a little tamer than the first...don't know why. anyway, maybe they shouldn't have had interval (i know, killing to the actors). but anyway, the second half was when i was damn annoyed with this guy sitting in front of me and being directly in my line of sight. ok, not his fault i think but it was annoying anyway. so, had to keep leaning over to sumi's side or to that guy on the other side of me so that i could see what was going on. bad for the second half cos so much was using almost the full stage. so there was the confrontation scene between raoul, phantom and christine, one of them was on one side of my vision, then the guy's head, then i saw the phantom on the other side. that was how bad it was. :p
anyway, where was i? oh yes, the masquerade ball. hmm...expected something a bit more grand. but, not too bad. probably cos i was annoyed with above mentioned annoyance that it drew my enjoyment of the scene away. did i mention that i love the phantom's voice? oh ya, that andre and firmant were the comics as usual, scaring each other by wearing skeleton outfits. oh ya, the phantom appeared as Red Death right? then after he delivered his opera, he vanished. as in seriously with a swish of his cloak and pulled a david copperfield in a flash of flame. *jaw drop*
the cemetery scene spooked me again. the usual spook lah. especially when it was behind that semi opaque screen. it was so etheral. but the song...well...didn't really enjoy it that much. like, not that much passion in it. but it worked ok. the scene itself was cool already. oh ya, and when raoul came to confront the phantom at the tomb...then the phantom, don't know what he was supposed to be doing, but he was shooting little fireballs at raoul. seriously, little fireballs were coming out from some device he was holding. scared me a little cos i thought it would fall on the prop (vines over the tomb) and catch fire. oh and then when phantom was declaring that it was now war on the both of them, there was fire shooting up from the stage floor!!!
then the usual...oh, "the point of no return" was SO sensual. oh my god. couldn't pick up the sensuality in the movie and recordings. but could seriously feel it here. it was like they were going to have hot passionate sex there and then. (ok, maybe not so extreme but you get the picture) that song was so well done. BUT, i expected the phantom to pull of another one of his vanishing acts with christine. but he didn't. they just ran into the wings. :p
the tech guys did damn well with this one. seriously. see, this is one of the reasons why i would like to work in theatre. create magic like this. *sigh* but i digress. anyway, not too much to talk about later on. raoul convinces mdm giry to bring him to the phantom...oh ya, he made mdm giry tell him the story of the phantom's history. that wasn't so well presented. it was just mdm giry telling the gist of the story, nothing very elaborate. don't think i would've gotten it if i didn't already know. she made it sound like she had no part in the affair at all, as in, she just said that she visited the travelling fair and saw the man in a cage and she'd remember him forever. ya.
the confrontation scene was damn intense! the part where the phantom tells to christine "you try my patience!!!" omg he was like
growling the line out, violently throwing the manniquin to one side. so sexy. i could really feel for the phantom. he was
pleading, "christine! christine! i love you." *gasp* felt sad for him. especially when she had gone, then she ran back to return him his ring (which incidently, he wore on his pinky finger lol). oh, but his "the world showed no compassion to me" wasn't as passionate as i expected. it was so sad when he sang his "it's over now the music of the night". i caught a previous line, him singing about himself being an angel in hell. it's true kinda. it's not that he wanted to be bad. he craved for human affection, for acceptance, for love. he's in hell because the world shunned him and treated him like a demon, a monster. it's very sad. first time i feel for the phantom's pain. when christine kissed him, how he must have felt. can only imagine.
then, the ending, when they found his lair. the phantom sat in his chair and covered himself up with his black cloak. then when meg giry came and she pulled off the cloak, the chair was empty except for the phantom mask. damn silly ending, she just held up the mask and showed it to the audience. lol! heard someone say that it was anti-climax. anyway, ya, they pulled another david copperfield there. it was more impressive somehow. it was like, did he realy exist? he vanished not say without a trace, but without a sound, like he never was there in the first place. it should have ended there instead of a few seconds later. anyway, beautiful anyway. standing ovations. loudest clap for the phantom (duh).
on the whole, like i said, well worth my money. wanted to buy "prima donna" tshirt but the crowd was quite bad and decided to save money in the end. so just got the programme book. definitely a must see. it brings the whole story to life somehow, better than watching it on tv. there's something about the stage performance that's so much better and more real. and that's that little thing that distinguishes theatre from cinema. anyway, not to discourse about that, let me rate this. on my multi purpose scale, i rate it
4 out of 5 stars. because well...raoul sounded like a duck, seriously. and phantom wasn't all that good of an actor, although i must say, he made up a lot of it with his singing. but no forgiving raoul. ;p ETA: reduced to 4 because i think 4.5 is a little too high. bit hard to explain, it's a subjective thing. but it's a solid 4.
photo! ok, it's official. i look fat. oh and sumi, your dress isn't messed up at the side, i edited it to remove the date mark. stupid camera put the wrong date on the picture.
